I don't normally talk about anything related to politics here. But what happened yesterday is heartbreaking. Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, famous for debating students across different universities, was shot dead during an event at Utah Valley University.
Personally, I didn’t agree with all of Charlie’s views, but no one should lose their life for their beliefs, especially in a democratic country built on free speech. This tragedy shows that we, as humans, have lost the ability to disagree without turning violent with each other. Social media echo chambers and escalating rhetoric can turn differences into perceived threats, sometimes with deadly consequences. Charlie wasn't even a politician. He's a media influencer that debates with students and gets the world thinking by posting it on the internet.
And the thing that makes it ten times worst is that his wife and children are present during the incident. They watched their husband and father got shot in front of their own eyes.
Is this the level that we, as humans, have reduced to? Just shoot and kill everyone that's got an opposing opinion?
Regardless of your political views, Charlie was a man with a loving family, tragically killed at 31, leaving behind his wife and children. It’s heartbreaking to see some social media comments mocking his death. I urge you, dear reader, to see him as a human being, even if you disagreed with his views. No one deserves to be shot and killed for ANY reason.
Below is a prayer for Charlie and his family, you're more than welcomed to use it or offer your own words. If you follow a different faith or none at all, I'd like to invite you to pray in your own tradition or observe a moment of silence in his memory. Thank you.
Almighty Father, we come before You in sorrow and distress. We pray for the soul of Your servant Charlie Kirk, a man who engaged the public square with conviction, though not all agreed with his words. Grant him, dear Father, Your mercy and peace, and receive him into Your everlasting arms.
We confess, merciful Father, the fragility of our human condition, where division has hardened hearts, and our inability to bear opposing views without turning to violence. Charlie was no politician, but a media voice, yet he was struck down in the presence of his beloved wife and children. No one should perish for their beliefs, dear Father; You have taught us to love our enemies and seek understanding in Your truth. We beg for Your forgiveness in our failings as a society and turn our hearts from hatred to love and humility.
We plead for Your comfort towards Charlie’s family in their hour of anguish—his wife, his children, and all who mourn. Surround them with Your loving-kindness, heal their wounds, and grant them strength to endure. Inspire us all, loving Father, to foster dialogue and peace, that such acts of brutality may cease, and Your kingdom of justice and mercy may draw near.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
