Pinebook: a laptop for $99 USD?

Recently a laptop called 'Pinebook' has caught my attention. This laptop costs only $99 USD and It's running Linux. A laptop this cheap usually won't be 'user-friendly' because many corners were cut for lowering the expenses. But $99 dollars? This is really unheard of. So let's take a look of this $99 dollar laptop's specs.

This is the Pinebook's specs shown in Pine64's website. As you can see, It's armed with an 1.2 GHz Allwinner A64 quad core processor. This processor might not be familiar with some of you so let me tell you a little bit about it. The Allwinner A64 is a 64-bit tablet processor developed by Allwinner which is a Chinese company. It's got Quad core Arm Cortex-A53 processors and a Mali-400 GPU. No wonder it's running Linux. I'm not sure it'll got enough power to run Windows.

So the specs isn't the best, in fact it's pretty poor. But again, It's $99 dollars. What do you expect?

This product I guess it's designed for Linux developers to test linux applications or different kinds of software on Linux and it's not designed for general users. It's user Interface is called Pine64 and according to the Pinebook communities and forums, I guess you can load ubuntu or chrome os on it.

If you are a Linux developer, I will recommend it for $99 dollars. Or you can pay $100 more for Pinebook Pro which has a 'better' processor.

But for those of you who just wanted a laptop for everyday use, For example just browsing the web, watch youtube and using zoom or google meet to chat with friends or family, I won't recommend it. The processor is way too weak for most of the tasks. In this case, i will recommend a Chromebook. Which is just slightly expensive than $99 dollars.

>Conclusion< :
If you're a linux developer or you don't have much money to spend on a laptop, I will recommend it. But for the others, save your $99 dollars.
